Ramón Alonso Carrizales Rengifo (born November 8, 1952 in Zaraza , Guárico ) is a Venezuelan politician and was Vice President of Venezuela under Hugo Chávez from 2008 to 2010 .

Life

Carrizales, a former colonel in the national armed forces and a graduate of Academia Militar Venezolana , has held various government offices since 2000. Initially, he headed the Fundación Fondo Nacional de Transporte Urbano (Fontur). In March 2004 he was appointed Minister of Infrastructure, and in 2007, following the restructuring of the Chávez government, he became Minister of Housing and Urban Planning ( Ministro para la Vivienda y Hábitat ).

In January 2008 President Chávez replaced Vice President Jorge Rodríguez , whom Chávez supporters blamed for the failure of the constitutional amendment, with Carrizales. He was also Minister of Defense since March 2009 . In January 2010, Carrizales resigned "for purely personal reasons". The resignation took place during the demonstrations against the closure of the television channel RCTV Internacional ( Radio Caracas Televisión Internacional ); Carrizales ruled out any connection with government decisions. Simultaneously with him, his wife, Environment Minister Yubirí Ortega , announced her resignation.

After Jesús Aguilarte Gámez, the governor of the state of Apure , had to resign for health reasons in February 2011, Carrizales took over the office. On December 16, 2013 he stood for the government coalition in the elections in Apure and was confirmed in office with 63.30% of the votes.
