Rami Hamdallah (2013)

Rami Hamdallah ( Arabic رامي حمد الله, DMG Rāmī Ḥamd Allāh ; * 1958 in Anabta , West Bank ) was Prime Minister of the State of Palestine and the Palestinian Territories from June 6, 2013 to April 14, 2019 . He is a former university president and a member of the Fatah party.

Life

Hamdallah received a bachelor's degree from the University of Jordan in 1980 , a master's degree from the University of Manchester in 1982 and a PhD from Lancaster University in 1988 . He worked as a university lecturer in linguistics and was President of the University of Nablus since 1998 . During his fifteen-year tenure as university president, the number of students tripled to around 20,000. Under his patronage, several hundred million US dollars were acquired, a new campus built and new subjects added to the university's offering. He also became Secretary General of the Palestinian Central Electoral Commission and President of the Palestinian Stock Exchange. He is a member of the Fatah party.

After Prime Minister Salam Fayyad resigned in April 2013 and his subsequent temporary mandate had expired, Hamdallah was commissioned by the President of the Palestinian Authority , Mahmud Abbas , to form a new government on June 2, 2013 . Hamdallah's cabinet was sworn in four days later and began its work. Just two weeks later, on June 20, 2013, Hamdallah submitted his resignation. Apparently he saw his authority threatened by Abbas. On June 23, Abbas accepted Hamdallah's resignation. Six weeks later, President Abbas asked him to form a new government, whereupon Hamdallah, who had remained in office without interruption, was reappointed Prime Minister on September 19, 2013.

The Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas , which controls the Gaza Strip , described the appointment of Hamdallah as prime minister as illegal.

On January 29, 2019, he announced his resignation, clearing the way for a new government, but remained in office temporarily. On March 10, 2019, Mohammed Shtajjeh was commissioned by Abbas to form a new government. On April 13, 2019, Shtajjeh and his cabinet were sworn in.
