Randal Keith Orton (born April 1, 1980 in Knoxville , Tennessee ), better known by his current ring name Randy Orton , is an American wrestler . He is currently under contract as one of the protagonists at WWE and appears regularly on their wrestling show Raw . Orton is a former World Heavyweight Champion and WWE Champion , as well as a Grand Slam Champion . His grandfather, Bob Orton senior, and his father, Bob Orton Jr., were successful wrestlers.

Life

In November 2005, Orton announced the engagement to his girlfriend Samantha Speno. They married on September 21, 2007. In December 2007, Orton announced that he and his wife were expecting their first child, a daughter. Alanna Marie Orton was born on July 12, 2008. In July 2013, TMZ reported that Orton and Speno divorced after separating in late 2012.

On July 30, 2013, Randy Orton was attacked by a spectator in Cape Town while on a WWE Smackdown tour of South Africa. WWE stated that the attack was not part of the scheduled event.

Wrestling career

Beginnings

Orton was trained professionally as a teenager. In St. Louis he learned from wrestlers like Ron Powers, Gary Jackson and Mark Bland. In 1999 Orton joined the South Broadway Athletic Club and worked in St. Louis, where his father accompanied him in the role of a manager . During this time in Missouri, today's WWE first showed interest in him.

World Wrestling Entertainment (since 2001)

Ohio Valley Wrestling (2001-2002)

In 2001 he played his first match for the WWE without having a contract with the then promotion World Wrestling Entertainment. He competed against Billy Gunn on the Sunday Night Heat sideline . Then he signed a sponsorship agreement with the WWE.

Like many young wrestlers before him, Orton was first sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling in Louisville to improve his wrestling skills. There he was allowed twice the OVW Hardcore Title win . He was trained here by his father Bob Orton Jr. , Danny Davis, Doug Basham and Nick Dinsmore , among others .

Evolution and youngest world heavyweight champion (2002-2004)

On April 25, 2002, Orton finally made his debut in the WWE. Initially, Orton was on SmackDown! used. After a while, the WWE put him on the roster of their Monday show RAW .

January 2003 Orton became a member of the Stable Evolution. During this time he won the WWE Intercontinental Title from Rob Van Dam , but had to hand it over to Edge in June 2004 .

At the PPV SummerSlam 2004 Orton won the World Heavyweight Title from Chris Benoit . With this win at the age of 24, he became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in WWE history. After a month as champion, he lost the title to Triple H at Unforgiven .

Legend Killer and Promotion to the Main Event (2005-2008)

Orton was suspended from WWE for a scheduled 60 days in 2006. He had violated the WWE wellness program several times. This suspension was lifted early due to a feud program against Kurt Angle. On November 13, 2006 Orton won the World Tag Team Title together with Edge . When the RAW issue on January 29, 2007, they had to give the title to John Cena and Shawn Michaels .

On August 31, 2007, a list was published according to which Randy Orton and various other WWE wrestlers were said to have obtained doping substances from Signature Pharmacy between September 2004 and February 2007. Unlike the other wrestlers concerned, Orton was not punished with a suspension, although he had already become suspicious in 2006. Instead, he received a WWE title match at Unforgiven 2007. However, this is due to the above-mentioned ban, which referred to this same doping abuse. On October 7, 2007 at No Mercy , Orton was named a WWE Champion. That evening he had to give up the title to Triple H, but won the title back in another match.

The Legacy and Face Turn (2008-2012)

At Backlash in April 2008, he lost his title in a fatal 4-way match to Triple H.

On January 25, 2009, Orton won the Royal Rumble for the first time . At the major event Backlash on April 26, 2009 Orton won the WWE Championship from Triple H. On June 7, 2009 at Extreme Rules , he had to surrender the title back to Batista . After injuring himself, Orton became WWE Champion for the fourth time on June 15, 2009 after winning a Fatal Four Way match on Monday Night RAW against Triple H, Big Show and John Cena.

On September 13, 2009 Orton had to give up the title at the major event WWE Breaking Point to John Cena. At the major event Hell in a Cell , he regained the title against John Cena. After three weeks, however, Orton had to give the title back to John Cena at the PPV Bragging Rights .

At Night of Champions on September 19, 2010 he got the WWE Championship in a six-pack challenge between Edge, Wade Barrett , Chris Jericho , John Cena and the previous title holder Sheamus . At RAW on November 22, 2010 Orton initially defended the title against Wade Barrett ; then he lost it to The Miz .

Through the WWE Draft 2011 April 25, 2011, Orton became the Smackdown - Roster changed. On May 3, 2011 he won Christian’s World Heavyweight Championship there for the second time . He lost the title to Christian on July 17, 2011 at the major event Money in the Bank , but was able to regain it just under a month later at SummerSlam on August 14. He finally lost the title at Night Of Champions on September 18, 2011 to Mark Henry. Several midcard feuds followed against Cody Rhodes , Wade Barrett and Kane.

On May 30, 2012, Orton was suspended for 60 days for a second violation of the WWE Wellness Policy . He returned to RAW on July 30, 2012.

The Authority and World Heavyweight Title Association (2013-2015)

He won the Money-in-the-Bank Ladder Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on July 14, 2013 . The clause that guaranteed him an immediate title match, he successfully redeemed a month later at Summerslam against Daniel Bryan and thus became WWE World Heavyweight Champion for the seventh time. Just a month later, he gave the title back to Bryan at the next major event. On October 27, 2013 he was able to win the vacant title again in a match against Daniel Bryan at the major event WWE Hell in a Cell . At WWE TLC on December 15, 2013, he defeated John Cena in a TLC match to become World Heavyweight Champion for the fourth time. Both titles were combined and Orton is called the first WWE World Heavyweight Champion . On April 6, 2014, he lost the WrestleMania XXX title in a triple threat match to Daniel Bryan.

Various feuds and Grand Slam Champion (since 2016)

With the WWE Draft on July 19, 2016, Orton was assigned to the SmackDown roster. On July 24, 2016, he returned to the WWE Battleground event after a 9-month hiatus due to a shoulder injury. On July 26th, he made his in-ring comeback against Intercontinental Champion The Miz. He started a feud against Bray Wyatt in August 2016 . During this feud, he joined the Wyatt Family . On December 4th, 2016 at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs , he and Bray Wyatt won the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship from Heath Slater and Rhyno . Since the Wyatt Family can defend the title under the Freebird Rule , Luke Harper is also champion. On December 27, 2016 at SmackDown, he and Luke Harper lost the titles to American Alpha ( Chad Gable and Jason Jordan).

On January 29, 2017, he won the Royal Rumble for the second time . In the lead up to WrestleMania 33, Orton was separated from the Wyatt Family. On April 2, 2017 at WrestleMania 33, he received the WWE Championship for the ninth time by defeating Bray Wyatt. He lost his title on May 21, 2017 at Backlash to Jinder Mahal .

On August 20, 2017, he won a match at the major event SummerSlam against Rusev , who attacked him before the match began.

By beating Bobby Roode on March 11, 2018 at Fastlane, he won the WWE United States Championship for the first time in his career . However, he lost the title again after 28 days of reign of Jinder Mahal at WrestleMania 34 this was a Fatal Four Way Match in which Bobby Roode and Rusev were also involved.

After losing the title, minor feuds ensued against Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio, among others . On February 17, 2019, Orton played an Elimination Chamber Match for the WWE Championship against the then champion Daniel Bryan , Samoa Joe , Kofi Kingston , AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy, but he could not win the match and the title to back up. At WrestleMania 35 he played a match against AJ Styles, which he lost. He participated in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match on May 19, 2019, but did not win the match. On June 7, 2019, Orton played a singles match against Triple H at WWE Super ShowDown, which he won. On August 11, 2019, he played a match for the WWE Championship against Kofi Kingston at WWE SummerSlam , which ended with a double countout, the title did not change as a result. On September 15, 2019, he played another match against Kofi Kingston for the WWE Championship, but he did not win the match. As part of the WWE Draft, Orton moved from SmackDown to Raw on October 11, 2019 . On November 24, 2019, he played a Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match against Braun Strowman , Roman Reigns , Mustafa Ali , King Corbin , Shorty G. , Damian Priest , Matt at the WWE Survivor Series together with Drew McIntyre , Ricochet , Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens Riddle , Keith Lee , WALTER and Tommaso Ciampa . He lost that match.

Outside of wrestling

Orton was the cover athlete for the video game WWE '12 . He was cast in the lead role in the action film The Marine 2 , but after injuring his collarbone he was replaced by Ted DiBiase . He had a supporting role in the comedy-drama film That's What I Am . Orton was supposed to star in the action film The Marine 3: Homefront , but was taken over by The Miz . Orton later starred in the action film 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded . In 2015 he starred in The Condemned 2 . He also had a guest role on the Shooter series .
