Raphoe ( ˈræfoʊ ; Irish : Ráth Bhoth ) is a small town in County Donegal in the north of the Republic of Ireland .

The place

Raphoe is located in the middle of an agricultural region in the very east of County Donegal, about 10 km from the border with Northern Ireland ( Tyrone / near Derry ) and 3 km west of the N14 from Lifford to Letterkenny . Its population was determined in the 2016 Census to be 1089 people. Parliamentary the place belongs to Donegal North East .

Raphoe is eponymous for both the Roman Catholic diocese of Raphoe and the Anglican Diocese of Derry and Raphoe , but is no longer the seat of the bishop.

The Beltany Stone Circle is the largest of the stone circles in Ulster, directly south of Raphoe . With its estimated age of 4,000 years, it indicates the long history of settlement in the region; Around 550 AD a monastery was founded here by Columban of Iona . The monastic settlement was further developed by his cousin Adomnan von Iona (Anglicised: Saint Eunan ), after whom the St. Eunan's Cathedral of the Church of Ireland built on the monastery property is named. The current appearance of Raphoe with the Diamond as the center goes back to the Ulster Plantation at the beginning of the 17th century, as in other cities in the region .

To the rail transport in Ireland Raphoe is disconnected from February 1959th
