Rauli Somerjoki

Rauli Aarre Tapani Somerjoki , known as Rauli "Badding" Somerjoki , (born August 30, 1947 in Somero , Finland , † January 14, 1987 in Helsinki , Finland) was a Finnish rock musician and singer.

Somerjoki participated in some of Mauri Antero Numminen's projects in the late 1960s . Among other things , he took part in the Jyväskylän Kesä Festival and was a member of the underground rock band Suomen Talvisota 1939-1940 .

Somerjoki started his solo career in 1970 with the first single Somerjoki's Mun Sormuksein . Although the track did not sell well, it was widely played on the radio and established Somerjoki's reputation as a solo artist. In the same year he also performed at Ruisrock, a major music festival in Turku.

Somerjoki's first LP Synnyin rokkaamaan was released in the summer of 1971. Among other things, it contains the song "Valot" in Finnish, which Somerjoki wrote and recorded in both Finnish and English. He had composed the English version especially for Elvis Presley , whom he admired , but when the latter had not responded to the tapes sent to Memphis, Somerjoki recorded the song himself. It is now an important part of Finnish popular music. The second "own" Somerjoki song is Pikku Neitsyt . There are also songs translated into Finnish by Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. The LP wasn't a huge hit, but these days Valot is one of Somerjoki's most popular songs.

From 1970 to 1972 Somerjoki was a member of the music group Oy Niittisydän Ab. His breakthrough came with the single Fiilaten ja Höylaten , a cover version of the song Reelin 'and Rockin' by Chuck Berry . The song dear to the top of the Finnish charts for several months. A first sampler was released for Christmas. In 1974 the new LP Näin käy rock & roll was released. The LP includes the song Paratiisi, which is perhaps Somerjoki's most famous song. After his third album, Sydän lämpöä tays , Somerjoki withdrew for a few years in 1975 because he suffered from stage anxiety and had alcohol problems .

In 1981 he made his comeback with his singles Kuihtuu kesäinen maa / Ensimmäisenä iltana and Paras haihtua vaan / Ikkunaprinsessa and released six more albums, Ikkunaprinsessa being his most successful. In 1981 the collaboration with the band Agents began.

His last appearance took place on December 28, 1986 in Seinäjoki. Somerjoki was already suffering from severe bronchitis in autumn. Somerjoki died in Helsinki in January 1987; the cause of death appeared to be related to his drinking problems. Somerjoki was only 39 years old.
