Edwin Raymond "Ray" Bowden (born September 13, 1909 in Looe , † September 23, 1998 in Plymouth ) was an English football player .
life and career
Bowden began his career with his home club Looe in 1925. At Looe he scored 100 goals in one year, and 10 even in one game, which is why Plymouth Argyle noticed him. In 1926 he signed an amateur contract with the Pilgrims. The striker was successful at Plymouth and even rose with the team in the second highest English division. In March 1933 it was sold to Arsenal FC for £ 4,500 . The Englishman won two English championships and one English cup with the Gunners, and in 1934 was Arsenal's top scorer. After injuries, Bowden broke the thread of success and he was "deported" to Newcastle United in 1937 for £ 5,000 . Bowden ended his career after the outbreak of World War II . Internationally, he played six times for the English national football team . He made his debut on September 29, 1934 against Wales and was one of the eleven players on the home team in the so-called Battle of Highbury against Italy . His only goal in the jersey of the Three Lions he scored against Wales in February 1936. After retiring, he opened a sports shop in Plymouth with his brother Austin. He died in Plymouth at the age of 89.
