Raymond "Ray" Richards (born May 18, 1946 in Croydon ) is a former Australian soccer player and soccer coach .

Life

Richards began his career in England and emigrated to Australia at the age of 19 . There he first played in Latrobe City , Queensland . After an interlude at Hollandia , he played for three clubs in Sydney until the end of his career in 1979 , the longest for the Marconi Stallions .

Furthermore, Richards played from 1967 to 1975 a total of 60 games for the Australian national team , in which he scored ten goals. With Australia he took part in the 1974 World Cup. He also played in the national teams of Queensland and New South Wales .

From 1974 to 1976 he coached the Marconi Stallions .

Trivia

Richards was the first Australian who was expelled from the field in a soccer World Cup game: In the game against Chile on June 22, 1974 (0-0), he received the red card in the 83rd minute .
