Herman Raymond "Ray" Walston (born November 2, 1914 in New Orleans , Louisiana , † January 1, 2001 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American theater , television and film actor . He had one of his best-known roles as Uncle Martin on the 1960s television show My Uncle from Mars .

Life

According to his father's will, Walston was supposed to get into the oil business, but from 1939 he preferred to move around with a wandering group of actors who, in addition to selling tickets, could also be on stage himself.

Walston then joined the Houston Civic Theater with Margo Jones for six years and then stayed at the Cleveland Playhouse for three seasons before moving to New York in 1945 . There he won a Tony Award in 1956 for his portrayal of the devil in the musical Damn Yankees . He played the same role in the musical adaptation of the same name in 1958. After this success, the theater actor Walston turned increasingly to film and television.

Probably the most famous role of Walston was that of Uncle Martin in the television series Mein Unkel vom Mars . He also played one of Jack Lemmon's superiors in The Apartment , and the sadistic boss of Jerry Lewis in The Shopkeeper , who makes life difficult for him on behalf of the department store owner. In The Clou, he played alongside Robert Redford and Paul Newman, one of the main contributors to the major fraud campaign aimed at depriving a major criminal of his money.

Walston was a guest star in a large number of television series, some of which have not yet been shown in Germany , such as Outlaws , Adventures in Paradise , Saints and Sinners or better-known series such as Crazy Wilder West , Twen-Police , Der Chef , Cobra, Take Over , The Six Million Dollar Man , Starsky & Hutch , Sledge Hammer! , The specialists on the way or Our little farm ( Little House on the Prairie) .

In the series Picket Fences - Tatort Gartenzaun he played the judge Henry Bone in a recurring role . In one of his last roles, Walston appeared as a caretaker and gardener Boothby on the Starfleet Academy campus in episodes from the Star Trek series Starship Enterprise - The Next Century and Star Trek: Starship Voyager .

Walston was married to Ruth Calvert (1916-2004) from 1943 until his death in 2001. The marriage produced a daughter.
