Career highlights and awards

Raimund "Ray" Wersching (born August 21, 1950 in Mondsee ) is a former Austrian American football player on the position of the kicker . He played for the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL).

Life

During his student days, Raimund Wersching played at Cerritos Junior College in California and at the University of California, Berkeley .

A professional team only became aware of Wersching after completing their studies. In 1973 the San Diego Chargers brought the talented young kicker to their team. There he spent four years until he switched to the San Francisco 49ers in 1977, with whom he won the Super Bowl for the first time in 1982 , against the Cincinnati Bengals (26:21 - Super Bowl XVI ). He contributed four field goals to the win , with which he set the Super Bowl record ( Don Candler of the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II ). Despite this good performance, he was not voted Super Bowl MVP . The award went instead to quarterback Joe Montana , who threw a touchdown pass and became the first quarterback to score a run touchdown in a Super Bowl.

Just three years later, Wersching took part in the Super Bowl again, this time against the Miami Dolphins . He scored his fifth field goal in a Super Bowl in this game and became the lucky owner of his second Super Bowl ring after the match. The San Francisco 49ers won 38:16. As with the first triumph, Joe Montana became the most valuable player.

In 1987 Wersching ended his career. His kicking style was striking : he never raised his head before the kick.

Wersching founded an insurance company for farmers during his career. According to his own statements, he withdrew from her in 2002. However, in 2006 he was charged with embezzling eight million dollars.

To this day (2010), Wersching holds the franchise records for field goals scored in a game with six, as well as those for the player with the most field goals scored (190).
