Raychelle Omamo

Raychelle Awour Omamo (born September 6, 1952 in Bondo ) is a Kenyan lawyer and politician . She was Minister of Defense until January 2020 and the first woman in the country to hold this post. She has been Kenya's Foreign Minister since January 14, 2020 .

Life

Raychelle Omamo is the daughter of William Omamo , who was Minister of Environment and then Minister of Agriculture of Kenya, chaired by Jomo Kenyatta .

Omamo studied law at the University of Kent in Canterbury , UK. She is a senior counsel and has served as a high court attorney for 27 years . From 2001 to 2003 she was the first female chairman of the Law Society of Kenya, after serving as a council member from 1996 to 2000, and the first Kenyan ambassador to France, Portugal, the Holy See and Serbia, as well as Kenya's Permanent Delegate to UNESCO . She was a member of the task force for the establishment of The Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission of Kenya (Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission for Kenya).

She has been the defense minister of her country since May 15, 2013. During a cabinet reshuffle on January 14, 2020, she was assigned the foreign affairs department and became Kenya's foreign minister.
