On September 3, 1960, a report published under his name appeared for the first time in Paris Match . From March 1962 to August 1963 he did his military service as a war correspondent in the Algerian war . He worked for the military propaganda magazine TAM ( Terre Air Mer ). In 1964 he documented the Vietnam War . Together with Hubert Henrotte, Hugues Vassal, Léonard de Remy and Gilles Caron , he founded the photo agency Gamma, which existed until 1999, in 1966 . For his report on Chile he won the Robert Capa Gold Medal in 1973 together with his colleagues Chas Gerretsen and David Burnett . His report from Chad, which was written from 1975 to 1977, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize . He left Gamma in 1978 to join the Magnum photography agency .

His first short film was about the Prague student Jan Palach in 1969 , who set himself on fire in protest against the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact forces . His first full-length documentary 1974-Une partie de campagne showed Valéry Giscard d'Estaing's election campaign for the French presidency. This film was banned for decades at the instigation of Giscard d'Estaing because it too clearly exposed the discrepancy between the private person and the presidential candidate. He received the French César film award in various categories in 1982, 1986 and 1994. The film was produced on the occasion of the 60th birthday of the Cannes Film Festival . A year later, Neue Zeiten (2008) was released in French cinemas. The portrait of agriculture in the Cevennes that was threatened with disappearing over a period of ten years earned Depardon the renowned Louis Delluc Prize .
