title

The full title of the first edition is:

Reales Staats- und Zeitungs-LEXICON Wherein both the religions and orders, the empires and states, seas, lakes, rivers, cities, forts, castles, ports, mountains, foothills, passes, forests and differences of miles, the lines of German houses, the knight's orders, imperial days, civil and military charges on water and land, coins, measures and weights that are common in different countries, related to the art of war construction, artillery, field warehouses, battle regulations, Schiffahrten, Difference of ships, and their related things, common names, as well as other terms in newspapers and daily conversation from all sorts of languages, to which the learned and the unlearned are clearly and clearly described for peculiar use, together with a double register and preface Mr. Johann Hübners, Rectoris of the Prince. Gymnasii zu Merseburg [Zierlinie] Published by Johann Friedrich Gleditsch, Buchhändl. In Leipzig, Anno 1704. [Line] With the most gracious freedoms.

General

In some representations, the work is erroneously attributed to the author of the preface, Johann Huebner . The editor was Philipp Balthasar Sinold called von Schütz , Hofrat of Prince Oels and later Privy Councilor of the Counts of Solms-Laubach . His authorship became public with the 1777 edition. However, the work was very soon referred to in the book market as the Huebner Lexicon . The name Hübner received the same image in the 18th century as the name Brockhaus in the 19th century.

Predecessor was: Curieuses Nouvellen-Lexicon, Oder Kurtze and clear explanation, where not all, but most ... in which newspapers appear ... German, French and Italian, also partly mutilated Latin words and speech styles: their translation. .. was also added in the Latin language by Christian Juncker, which was published in Frankfurt am Main in 1703 as an attached work to Christian Weisen's Curieuse Gedancken from the Nouvellen or newspapers .

Sources for the processing of the lexicon were books taken from various sciences in all kinds of languages , of which only the one used for the geographic data is expressly cited: Michel Baudrand, Dictionnaire géographique universel , Amsterdam 1701.

In the preface to the 6th edition from 1713, the conversation that the lexicon has been trying to serve since the 3rd edition is discussed for the first time : ... because, furthermore, in this book there is no cathedralic erudition , but only all kinds of everyday political dealings with shied [clever ] People indispensable pieces of gallant erudition are contained: So one can call it with all right a state, newspaper and conversation lexicon . This shifted the focus of the lexicon towards popular education and gave priority to the unlearned people named in the title over the scholars named .

As a supplement, the third edition of the Curieuse Natur-Kunst-Gewerck- und Handlungs-Lexicon , first published in 1712 by Verlag Gleditsch and compiled by Paul Jacob Marperger , was announced in 1708 , to which Johann Hübner also wrote the preface. It was already noted in its title that this can be used with great advantage as another part of the Real State, Newspaper and Conversation Lexici, because it explains what has been sought in that bithero many times. Both works together thus resulted in a multi-volume, comprehensive lexicon, which divided its articles into two alphabetical sequences.

The work was spread quickly, as its use was recommended by educators such as Christian Schröter . He praised in his Kurtzen statement to inform the nobles Youth (1704) in § 32, the lexicon as a wonderful work and recommended it in reading newspapers diligently to pitch to derive Geographica, Genealogia, Historica and Politica to learn.
