Rebecca Ann Johnston (born September 24, 1989 in Sudbury , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who belongs to the Canadian women's national team and has played for the Calgary Inferno in the Canadian Women's Hockey League since 2014 . Before that, she studied at Cornell University , for which she competed in ice hockey as well as in athletics competitions. She is Mike Johnston's niece .

Career

In 2007 Johnston and her future teammate Catherine White took part in the Canada Winter Games for the province of Ontario . In the final against Manitoba , both Johnston and White scored one goal and two assists each, while Team Ontario won the game 6-3 and unbeaten the tournament.

In the same year Johnston began studying agriculture and environmental science at Cornell University and has since played for their ice hockey team, the Big Red , in the ECAC hockey . her older sister Sarah and her brother Jacob also play for Big Red . After her first season, she was elected to the league's All-Star Team and was also named Rookie of the Year. During the 2008/09 season Johnston reached the mark of 37 scorer points by mid-February 2009, setting a record for Cornell University, which had been set up in the 1991/92 season by Kim Ratushny.

International

Johnston began her international career on the U22 national team, with which she won two gold medals at the U22 Air Canada Cup. In 2008 she made her debut in the women's national team and took part in the 2008 World Cup. She won the silver medal with the national team.

In 2009 she took part in the MLP Nations Cup in Ravensburg and won another silver medal. Johnston contributed three goals and four assists to this success, scoring a hat trick in the game against Russia . She also took part in the 4 Nations Cup 2009 . In 2010 she won the gold medal with the national team at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver .

In 2011 and 2013 she won the silver medal with Team Canada at the women's world championships, while she won the gold medal at the 2012 world championships. In 2014 she added another gold medal to her collection of medals when she and the national team defeated the USA 3-2 in the Olympic final . In the following three years she was part of the regular squad of the national women's selection and won three more silver medals at the annual world championships. She was also elected to the tournament's all-star team at the 2016 Women's Ice Hockey World Cup .
