Red Flag Linux ( 红旗 Linux ) is a Linux distribution tailored to Chinese needs , which will initially be a replacement for Microsoft Windows in Asia , but later also worldwide . The distribution is funded by the Chinese government, among others.

history

Red Flag Linux first appeared in August 1999. The Linux distribution was developed by the Institute for Software at the Chinese Academy of Science . Financial support came from Shanghai NewMargin Venture Capital , which in turn is owned by the Chinese government. The Chinese state has supported the development and distribution of Red Flag Linux since the beginning in a financial way, but also politically in the sales market in China. Other partners in the Red Flag project were initially Compaq (which was later acquired by Hewlett-Packard ) and Beijing Founder Electronics .

In 2000, Red Flag Software Co., Ltd. was founded. (often just called Red Flag ), whose headquarters are in Beijing . Since then, the company has been developing Linux systems and programs for workstation and server use .

In March 2001, Bloomberg News reported that CCIDNET Investment , part of the Ministry of Information Industry , had become the second largest shareholder in Red Flag.

According to gartner .com, on December 28, 2001, the Beijing government awarded contracts for office and anti-virus applications and operating software to six different local software providers, including Red Flag, but Microsoft, the seventh applicant, rejected it.

Since 2004, China , South Korea and Japan have been working together on plans to make Red Flag Linux a major Windows alternative. According to media reports, companies such as NTT Data , Matsushita Electric , NEC , Hitachi and Fujitsu are to participate in the plans for the development and use of open source software. This search for a replacement for Windows was justified with the unwanted dependence on US companies such as Microsoft , as well as concerns about protection against attacks by computer viruses . For example, a spokesman for the Japanese Ministry of Commerce announced that they wanted to develop an open source operating system because they understood that "market dominance by a single company is not good". The stability of Linux also spoke in favor of Linux.

In 2006, Red Flag Linux had a market share of over 80% in Linux desktops in China.

SAP has supported some versions on RedFlag Linux since March 2006. SAP ERP 2004 SR1 ECC5.0 and CRM 4.0 on WebAS 6.20 are approved for installation. The following versions are allowed:

  • RedFlag Advance Server 4.1 on I386
  • RedFlag Data Center Server 5.0 on x86_64
  • RedFlag Data Center Server 5.0 on Power (ppc64)

The following databases are permitted:

  • MaxDB
  • IBM DB2 Universal Database
  • Oracle 9i and 10g

On February 17, 2014, the South China Morning Post reported that Red Flag Linux was about to end. The reason for this is mismanagement and the low level of awareness of Red Flag Linux, which could not really assert itself against major competitors such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server . In addition, the company is said to have financial problems with wage and invoice payments. Therefore, the contracts are to be terminated on Thursday and the project will be discontinued.

Intention and goals

According to Matei Mihalca , the goal of Red Flag Linux is to reduce the dominant position of Microsoft Windows on the Chinese computer market, which can best be achieved through “complete transparency of the underlying code”. Cost savings also play a role.

The company Red Flag Software is focused on the development and distribution of Linux -based operating system and associated application software for a variety of computer platforms to meet Chinese to the growing demand technology users.

Red-Flag uses the StarOffice office suite from Sun Microsystems and uses K Desktop Environment as the desktop system .

The Red Flag project signed an agreement with Trolltech to create a platform for embedded Linux systems to be manufactured in China. The procedure behind Red Flag Linux means that in addition to other Linux distributions, Red Flag Linux is also offered in the shops. In China, for example, PCs with pre-installed Linux are also sold to a large extent, while in Europe a PC purchase usually includes Windows as the operating system.

Red Flag works on the Chinese market with companies such as Hewlett-Packard , Oracle , IBM , Dell , Intel as well as BEA Systems , SGI , Sybase , Haier , Great Wall and TCL . With the help of Hewlett-Packard, Red Flag Software intends to open up the world market in the near future. Since Red Hat wants to expand into China, a partnership was also formed between Red Flag and Red Hat in 2004.
