Red Savina ( Capsicum chinense cv. 'Red Savina')

The Red Savina is a cultivated form of the species Capsicum chinense and thus belongs to the genus Paprika ( Capsicum ).

The variety was developed by GNS Spices , based in Walnut , Southern California , under the direction of Frank Garcia, and is protected under the US Plant Variety Protection Act (PVP # 9200255).

Until 2006, Red Savina held the record of the hottest chilli variety in the world with 577,000 measured Scoville units and was thus also in the Guinness Book of Records . This means that the fruits of the plant contain almost 4% capsaicin . Usual breeds of Habanero produce around 100,000–300,000 Scoville units, which is 65 times the heat of a jalapeño . Red Savina was surpassed by some Capsicum chinense varieties from India . The new record holder since 2013 is the Carolina Reaper with over 2,000,000 Scoville units.

In a test in which the value for the hottest chilli in the world was determined, only a value of 248,556 SHU was measured for the Red Savina. It was still below the value of the habanero and well below the value given in the Guinness Book of Records.
