Reda Kateb (born July 27, 1977 in Paris ) is a French actor .

Life

Kateb was born in Paris to the Algerian actor Malek Eddine Kateb and a French nurse with Czech-Italian roots, but grew up in Ivry-sur-Seine . His great-uncle is the writer Kateb Yacine ; Kateb is also related to actor Mustapha Kateb and showed an early interest in the theater. He first appeared on stage at the age of eight. He made up his mind to become an actor at the age of twelve and was an usher and projectionist in his hometown as a teenager. After graduating from high school, however, he first began studying literature before finally turning to the theater. Kateb first played theater at the Théâtre du chaos, with which he appeared in prisons, schools and hospitals. During this time he earned his living with smaller jobs, such as working in a call center .

He took on his first major television role in 2008 in the television series Engrenages , in which he was seen in six episodes as the drug dealer Aziz. Jacques Audiard noticed him and cast him in his film A Prophet as a drug dealer Jordi. In Barefoot on Nudibranchs , Kateb played a minor supporting role in a comedy film for the first time the following year. During this time he consciously took on small roles that expanded his range of types on the screen, as he did not want to be tied to the role of the villain. Kateb returned to television in 2010 and appeared in the third season of the television series Mafiosa in the role of Nader. Further cinema and television films followed.

Kathryn Bigelow cast Kateb in the role of the terrorist Ammar in her 2012 film Zero Dark Thirty . For his portrayal of the doctor Abdel in Hippocrate , Kateb was awarded a César in the category Best Supporting Actor in 2015. In the same year he received the Patrick Dewaere Prize , the most important French film prize for young actors. In 2016 he played the male lead in the Handke film adaptation of The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez by Wim Wenders . In 2017 the French feature film Django - A Life for Music by Étienne Comar opened the 67th Berlin International Film Festival . Kateb took on the title role of Django Reinhardt . In the same year he was named as a member of the jury of the Un Certain Regard section at the 70th Cannes International Film Festival .

Kateb lives in Montreuil . In addition to French citizenship, he also has Algerian citizenship. He is almost blind in the right eye.
