Referendum on the monarchy in Tuvalu in 2008

A referendum on the monarchy in Tuvalu took place on April 30, 2008. All residents of the Pacific island state of Tuvalu who were eligible to vote were called to vote on maintaining the monarchy .

With approval, Tuvalu would have become a republic . The President would have been elected by Parliament.

Result

The referendum failed. 679 votes were cast for the republic, 1260 for maintaining the monarchy. The turnout was very low; only 1939 of the approximately 9,000 possible votes were cast.
