The administrative district of Freiburg is one of four administrative districts in the state of Baden-Württemberg ( Germany ). It stands in the hierarchy between the districts on the one hand and the state government on the other.

The administrative district of Freiburg is located in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg and was called the administrative district of South Baden until December 31, 1972 . However, it had a different cut back then. In the south it borders on Switzerland , in the west on Alsace ( France ), in the north on the administrative district of Karlsruhe and in the east on the administrative district of Tübingen . In its current extent, it goes back to the administrative and territorial reform of 1973.

history

The administrative district of Freiburg has existed since the formation of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. Its authority, the regional council, has been mainly responsible for the area of ​​the former state of Baden (capital Freiburg), which emerged from the French occupation zone after the Second World War and the southern part of Baden , which existed from 1806 to 1945 . The administrative district was therefore initially called the southern Baden region .

During the territorial reform, which came into force on January 1, 1973, the areas around Rastatt and Baden-Baden (to the administrative district of Karlsruhe ) and Überlingen and Meßkirch (to the administrative district of Tübingen ) were transferred. For this purpose, the area of ​​responsibility of the regional council of Freiburg was extended to the districts of Rottweil and Tuttlingen. Since the authority is therefore also responsible for the former Wuerttemberg areas, the administrative district of South Baden was renamed the administrative district of Freiburg.

The highest authority is the regional council with its headquarters in the historic Basler Hof in the old town of Freiburg im Breisgau , built around 1500 by Konrad Stürtzel , court chancellor of Emperor Maximilians I. It also maintains eight other locations in Freiburg. The largest location is the new building of the regional council in the Betzenhausen district , which is also the official street address.
