The regional museum in Neubrandenburg was created in 1872 on the initiative of the Neubrandenburg Museum Association, which was founded especially for this purpose . The catchment area and impact of the museum, the name of which has changed several times in the course of history, has been nationally oriented from the start. In 1873 the association opened a first permanent exhibition on the history of the region in the main tower of the Treptower Tor in Neubrandenburg . The result was the first civic museum in the Mecklenburg-Strelitz region . Until the mid-1930s, the museum remained in the sponsorship of the association and only became the sponsorship of the city when the association decided to dissolve itself under National Socialist pressure.

Until 1989, the Neubrandenburg Museum took on the role of "Historical District Museum" and served as a key function for other museums in the Neubrandenburg district . Today the Regional Museum Neubrandenburg fulfills the tasks of a city museum of Neubrandenburg and its region at several exhibition locations, with diverse activities and extensive collections and is one of the oldest cultural-historical museums in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

One of the most important tasks of the regional museum is exhibition activity. Currently, expositions on the history of the city and the surrounding area are shown at three locations in the center of Neubrandenburg.

  • The oldest exhibition site of the regional museum, opened in 1873, is the main gate of the Treptower Tor. Today there is an exhibition on the history of the region from the first human settlement to the Middle Ages. On the fifth floor of the gate tower there is an exhibition on the subject of “In search of Rethra ”. This fifth floor of the exhibition has been blocked by the building authorities since June 2015 - a solution is being sought.
  • The permanent and special exhibition (s) on Neubrandenburg's city and regional history have been located in the former Franciscan monastery , the oldest preserved building complex in the city, since September 10, 2013 .
  • In the tower of the Concert Church in Neubrandenburg there is an exhibition on the subject of “Paths to Brick Gothic”, which is intended to bring the beauty and richness of forms of the brick Gothic in the region closer to the visitor .

Publications

The Regional Museum Neubrandenburg has been publishing the Neubrandenburg Mosaic as a local history yearbook since 1975 , which is now considered the oldest series of publications on regional history in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In addition, since the late 1980s, the museum has continued the series of publications founded by Annalize Wagner in 1966 , in which thematic volumes appear in irregular succession in the form of monographs.

Neubrandenburg Museum Association

The Neubrandenburg Museum Association was re-established in 1990 and today has around 70 members. There are several thematic working groups in the association. The Heinrich Schliemann youth club had also existed since 1963 . Under the direction of Annelore Seeger, Paul Schumacher and Volker Schmidt , young people dealt with excavations and topics from prehistory and early history. Most recently, museum employee Rainer Szczesiak ran the youth club on a voluntary basis. In 2010 the youth work of the museum association was stopped until further notice due to lack of demand. At that time the Schliemann Club was the oldest German youth work group in the field of history and local history.
