Regional traffic (Switzerland)

According to Swiss law ( Passenger Transport Act ), regional transport refers to that part of public transport that serves to provide basic access to the regions. He is distinguished from

  • Long-distance transport connecting parts of the country and regions;
  • Local traffic that perceives the fine development in the local area;
  • Excursion traffic that has no development function for all year round inhabited places.

Only routes that have a development function are considered regional transport. This is given if the line runs all year round and opens up places in which at least 100 people live all year round.

Regional transport in Switzerland is ordered and financed jointly by the federal government and the cantons, regardless of the mode of transport. The following modes of transport are involved:

  • railroad
  • bus
  • Cableways
  • Ships (inland shipping)

The customer can also put regional transport routes out to tender, be it for new services or if the costs and / or quality of the transport company are insufficient.
