Reinhard Maria Wilhelm Ludwig Piper (born October 31, 1879 in Penzlin , † October 18, 1953 in Munich ) was a German publisher . He founded 1904 in Munich the publisher R. Piper & Co.

Life

Reinhard Piper grew up as the son of castle researcher and mayor Otto Piper, initially in Penzlin in Mecklenburg-Schwerin . From 1889 to 1893 the family lived in Konstanz on Lake Constance, where the father worked as a freelance castle researcher. In 1893 the Piper family moved to Munich. After the one year old (secondary school leaving certificate), Reinhard Piper completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller in the Palmschen Hofbuchhandlung in Munich from 1895–1898 and worked in the Berlin bookshop Adolf Weber from 1898–1901 . In 1900 he met the sculptor and writer Ernst Barlach , with whom he had a lifelong friendship. 1902–1903 he worked in the bookstore Köhler in Dresden . In the same year he published his first book with Dafnis von Arno Holz . On May 19, 1904, he and Georg Müller founded the R. Piper & Co. publishing house in Munich. As a result, the publisher published Dostoyevsky's Complete Works and numerous books on art. Also 49 pictures from the Isenheim Altarpiece .

After the divorce from his first wife, Piper married the painter Gertrud Engling from Königsberg in 1910, son Klaus was born in 1911, son Martin in 1913 and daughter Ulrike in 1923. In 1912 Piper first met the painter Max Beckmann . Piper was in contact with artists from the group Der Blaue Reiter such as Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky , whose almanac Der Blaue Reiter he published. Since 1923, Piper has also published reproductions of paintings by old and new masters, the so-called Piper prints . He took part in the cabaret The Elf Executioners . In 1953, Piper died of a stroke .

His estate is in the German Literature Archive in Marbach .
