Reinhold Koser

Reinhold Koser (born February 7, 1852 in Schmarsow near Prenzlau , † August 25, 1914 in Berlin ) was a German historian and director of the Prussian Secret State Archives .

Life

Reinhold Koser studied history and philology in Berlin , Vienna - there he joined the Silesia fraternity - and Halle . He received his doctorate in 1874 with a topic on the Thirty Years War : The Chancellery dispute: a contribution to the source study of the history of the Thirty Years War . Between 1874 and 1885 Koser took part in the publications of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin, where he held positions as a private lecturer at the university from 1880 and as a "secret state archivist" in 1882, until he was appointed associate professor in 1884 and left the archive service.

Koser was appointed full professor at the University of Bonn in 1890 as the successor to Alfred Dove and, after Heinrich von Sybel's death, was appointed director of the Prussian State Archives in 1896. In the same year he was accepted as a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1897 he was appointed to the Secret Upper Government Council and in 1898 to the historiographer of the Prussian state . From 1901 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Koser was editor of the first four volumes of the research on Brandenburg and Prussian history. New series of the “Märkische Forschungen” of the association for the history of the Mark Brandenburg , which from 1888 annually “in connection with Ms. Holtze , G. Schmoller , A. Stölzel , A. v. Taysen et al. H. v. Treitschke ”published by Duncker & Humblot in Leipzig. His successor was Albert Naudé.

In 1895, Kaiser Wilhelm II. Koser transferred the management of the historical program for the Siegesallee he had planned and completed in 1901 . Koser was thus responsible for the selection of the 32 statues and 64 secondary characters of the monumental boulevard, which the Berlin population ridiculed as a doll's avenue , but ultimately had to comply with the imperial specifications. From 1905 to 1914 he was chairman of the central management of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica .

Koser's main work is the story of Frederick the Great , for which he was awarded the order Pour le mérite for science and the arts in 1912 and the Verdun Prize in 1904 .

Reinhold Koser died in Berlin in 1914 at the age of 62. His grave is in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg . By resolution of the Berlin Senate , the last resting place of Reinhold Koser (grave site 5-1-2) has been dedicated as an honorary grave of the State of Berlin since 1980 . The dedication was extended in 2001 by the usual period of twenty years.
