Reishiki

Reishiki ( Japanese 礼 式 , also Reigi 礼儀 , Reihō 礼 法 or just Rei ) is the entirety of the rules of conduct in Japanese martial arts ( Budō ).

Which rituals and rules of politeness are to be observed with which severity differs from dōjō to dōjō, but the following rules apply at most places along the way , regardless of the discipline practiced there:

  • Various forms of rei are required.
  • No shoes are worn in the dojo.
  • Punctuality.
  • General courtesy, humility and circumspection in speech and deed.
  • Respect for the teacher, the classmates and the place.
  • Clothing and equipment must be carefully looked after.
  • Your own body should be clean and well cared for.
  • In the event of a delay or premature termination of the training, the teacher must be informed.
  • There should be no unnecessary speech during the class.
  • Eating, drinking or chewing gum is not permitted in the dojo.
  • Be ambitious and committed.

The great masters of the martial arts have often emphasized the aspect of courtesy:

  • "Without courtesy, the essence of karate- do is lost." ( Funakoshi Gichin )
  • "Karate begins with respect and ends with respect." (Funakoshi Gichin)
