Rejected is an American animated short film directed by Don Hertzfeldt in 2000.

action

In the spring, the Family Learning Channel commissioned Don Hertzfeldt to produce advertising films for the station, but rejected all of the films completed within five weeks: Among other things, they show a man with a giant spoon in front of a small cereal bowl and a banana, the common places of himself (“My spoon is too big.” - “I am a banana.”), as well as two males who talk nonsense, whereupon a monster snowman grows out of your head, the other says “F * ck” and is flown over by a pig jellyfish becomes. At a "Silly Hats Only" party, a cylinder-wearer is lynched by the other people present and two males speak nonsense again, whereupon a gush of blood flows from the eye of one and soaks the other in blood.

Hertzfeldt's commercials were not only rejected by the Family Learning Channel. Johnson & Mills was also not satisfied with the commercials for their products. For example, a male looks at a sign that reads "Pay attention to the right of way". When a UFO lands and an alien removes both eyes, he still runs against the shield. Two males talk to each other and one tears the other's stomach open, whereupon the organs fall out. A toddler makes proud of his parents watching his first steps and falls down the stairs, whereupon applause breaks out. A cloud prompts other clouds to dance, but ends up drowning in blood that runs out of its anus. This is always followed by advertising slogans (“johnson & mills fish sticks - Now with more sodium.”, “Johnson & mills bean lard mulch - now with vitamin c!”).

The increasing intellectual decline of Hertzfeldt's works is in the end also accompanied by his personal decline, so he begins to create wobbly animation sequences with his left hand. The films, in turn, disintegrate over time due to non-use, so the advertising slogans pile up and individual characters are killed by others. Some males take refuge on empty pages, which, however, are soon crumpled up and eventually disappear into black.

production

Work on Rejected began on March 3, 1999. Like many of Hertzfeldt's films, Rejected was based on improvisation. Scenes were discarded, recut, the sequence of the scenes was subject to constant changes, dialogues were rewritten, although the associated scenes were already animated or replaced by sound effects. All scenes are traditionally hand-animated; the scenes at the end of the film were implemented in stop motion . In retrospect, Rejected is considered to be Hertzfeldt's “most behind schedule and wildly out of control project”, i.e. the most chaotic project with the greatest delay.

The individual segments are separated by Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony , 1st and 2nd movement. In the scene of the dancing clouds, the Swedish Christmas carol Nu är det jul igen can be heard in the background . The characters were dubbed by Don Hertzfeldt, Robert May and Jennifer Nyholm.

The film had its premiere in the spring of 2000 at the San Diego Comic-Con International and caused irritation and the question of whether the film was "real" - Hertzfeldt actually never worked in the advertising film sector and the film is purely fictional. In the meantime it has achieved cult status in fan circles .

Awards

Rejected won Gold Hugo for Best Animated Short Film at the Chicago International Film Festival in 2000 . He received the Flying Gherkin International Award for Creativity at the Melbourne International Animation Festival in 2001.

The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2001 in the category " Best Animated Short Film ", but could not prevail against Father and Daughter . He also received an Annie nomination.
