René-Jean Dupuy

René-Jean Dupuy (born February 7, 1918 in Tunis ; † July 17, 1997 in Paris ) was a French lawyer and from 1979 professor of international law at the Collège de France in Paris. In addition, he worked from 1966 to 1984 as Secretary General of the Hague Academy for International Law and was a member of its board of trustees from 1985.

Life

René-Jean Dupuy was born in Tunis in 1918 and, after studying law in Paris and gaining a doctorate in 1948, worked as a lecturer at the universities of Algiers , Aix-en-Provence , Nice and Paris from 1950 . In 1960, 1973, 1979 and 1989 he taught at the Hague Academy for International Law , where he also worked as Secretary General from 1966 to 1984 and was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1985.

From 1979 to 1989 he taught as a full professor of international law and then until his death as an honorary professor at the Collège de France . He died in Paris in 1997. His son Pierre-Marie Dupuy , born in 1946 , was professor of international law in Paris, Florence and Geneva.

Awards

René-Jean Dupuy was a member of the Institut de Droit international from 1967 , of which he was president from 1995 to 1997. He was also a member of the French Académie des sciences morales et politiques and a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens and the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas in Spain .

The Société française pour le droit international (French Society for International Law) appointed him honorary president. He was also the holder of the Ordre national du Mérite , commander of the French Legion of Honor and, from 1994, an honorary member of the American Society for International Law . He received an honorary doctorate from the universities of Mainz , Krakow and Montreal .
