René Beeh (born February 28, 1886 in Strasbourg ; † January 23, 1922 there ) was a German draftsman and painter from Alsace . He enjoyed a high reputation among his contemporaries and was described by the art historian Wilhelm Hausenstein as "the coming genius". Due to his untimely death he was largely forgotten.

life and work

René Beeh was taught at the art school in Strasbourg from 1900 to 1905 , then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (student number 2936, registered on May 9, 1905), where Peter Halm , Hugo von Habermann and Franz von Stuck were his teachers . In 1910 he traveled to French Algeria , where he stayed until 1911 before traveling through Italy and Provence . In 1914 he published a selection of letters from Algeria and sixty drawings under the title M'Barka painter's letters from Algeria with sixty drawings

During the First World War , Beeh was drafted as a surveyor for the imperial German army on the western front in Belgium (on the Ypres bend ) and northern France. Some of his war drawings were published in the Munich magazine Zeit-Echo . After the war, Beeh, who suffered from depression, is said to have destroyed much of his own work. He died of severe seasonal flu at the age of 36.

Beeh was a member of the New Munich Secession . He was also friends with several members of the Strasbourg painters group "Groupe de Mai".

In 1914 Beeh illustrated a book for the 100th birthday of Gottfried Keller and 1919–1920 the novel Inferno by August Strindberg . He also illustrated The Black Spider by Jeremias Gotthelf (edition from 1918) and worked together with Paul Klee , Heinrich Campendonk and Alfred Kubin on the Munich sheets for poetry and graphics .

Painting "La Révolution"

The artist's most important surviving work is the large painting La Révolution ( The Revolution, oil on canvas, 120.5 cm × 156.5 cm, painted 1918–1919), a threatening depiction of the events of November 1918 in Strasbourg , painted only in Ocher and brown tones. The painting shows a small group of men at close range reaching for guns, seemingly ready to attack. But instead of rushing towards the viewer, they look at a figure in work clothes who is sitting motionless with an unfathomable expression. The plot seems frozen and it seems as if time has been interrupted the moment the violence breaks out.

Aftermath

In 2008 the Musée historique in Haguenau organized the first exhibition of his works in France. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Strasbourg owns 98 works by Beeh (as of January 1, 2016): 54 prints, 36 drawings and 8 paintings, including two self-portraits, a portrait of the artist's father and sister and La Révolution . The Los Angeles County Museum of Art currently owns 83 and the Museum of Modern Art in New York 27 drawings and prints by the artist.
