Renolit is an international family company in the chemical industry based in Worms.

Corporate development

On May 4th, 1946, Renolit was founded by Jakob Müller in Worms. The "Renolit-Werke company with limited liability", with seven employees at the time, produced PVC sheets made of IGELIT as a replacement for leather, which was scarce in the post-war period. It could be made into all sorts of other utensils - from floor panels to raincoats. The company's own financial strength enabled investments such as the first calender in 1950 for continuous production. This started the production of plastic films for furniture upholstery and office supplies for the booming furniture industry. A sales company of its own was created.

In 1954, Jakob Müller paid out CHAG, two years later laid the foundation stone for the headquarters in Worms and ventured abroad early on with shops in Holland and a plant in Spain.

From 1964, Renolit Haus GmbH offered prefabricated houses and a larger product portfolio.

Self-adhesive films for taxis or police vehicles, for example, were added to the Renolit portfolio in the 1970s and films for window profiles from 1981. For the first time, these could be colored as desired and gave the company world market leadership in this product segment. With thermally deformable furniture films, a design product was added at the end of the decade. In the years from 1960 to 2000, further worldwide branches were founded and acquired.

Shortly before the turn of the millennium, the international orientation of the family company accelerated. The management decided to take the biggest step in 2006 with the takeover of the industrial film division of the Belgian chemical company Solvay for 330 million euros. This included 19 locations in Europe and North America as well as joint ventures in China and Brazil. In the same year, a film company in China was also acquired. In 2008 and 2009 Renolit expanded to Russia, Ukraine and India. In 2010 the Italian film manufacturer Eurogloss was taken over by Renolit and integrated into the newly founded company Renolit Milano Srl. One year later, the company expanded into Turkey and converted from an AG to an SE (European Company, Societas Europaea). The takeover of the "Medical Film Division" of AUSTAR PMC in China and its integration into the Renolit Medical division took place in 2012. In 2018, the Renolit Chile SpA production site was opened in Valparaiso.

The Renolit Group has become a global company with over 4,700 employees. More than 1,000 of these are employed at the headquarters in Worms and around 2,090 throughout Germany. The company is active on four continents in 20 different countries with more than 30 production facilities and sales companies. Wirtschaftswoche ranks them among the 20 hidden champions in Germany.

The name Renolit is a combination of “RENO”, a leather-like material, and “LIT”, which is derived from IGELIT.
