Reto Parolari (born March 9, 1952 in Winterthur ; †  December 15, 2019 in Brissago ) was a Swiss conductor .

Reto Parolari was born in Winterthur as the son of oboist Egon Parolari . He completed his music studies with the main subjects percussion and piano at the music college in his hometown with an orchestral diploma. He then deepened the subjects of arranging , orchestrating and conducting with Ernst Hildebrand in Hanover , with Heinz Buchold in Stuttgart and with Max Schönherr in Vienna . Parolaris mentors included conductors Kurt Brass and Emmerich Smola .

In 1973 the conductor founded the «Orchester Reto Parolari» - with 40 instrumentalists, it is the only private symphony orchestra in Europe that is dedicated to the performance and maintenance of sophisticated light music in original instrumentation. His repertoire includes operettas, musicals and Viennese waltzes as well as suites, overtures and potpourris. But this body of sound has also opened up to new trends and bears the Reto Parolaris signature like no other.

In 1982 Reto Parolari was the conductor for operettas and musicals at the Stadttheater St. Gallen . In the same year he began conducting for six years at the Swiss National Circus Knie . From 1987 to 2000 he directed the orchestra of the Royal Theater Carré in Amsterdam . From 2000 to 2003 he was musical director of Circus Krone in Munich . Since 1997 he has also been chief conductor of the world-renowned “International Circus Festival” in Monte Carlo .

In 1991 Reto Parolari launched the "International Festival of High- Class Popular Music " , the only major festival of its kind in Europe. Held annually in Winterthur under the direction of its founder, in the course of its history it has developed into an exchange for good light music.

The internationally sought-after specialist in popular music has led to many years of engagements as a guest conductor in Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, the Netherlands and numerous cities in his home country. Among the orchestras that Reto Parolari has conducted as a guest are the Basler Orchestergesellschaft, the Bruckner Orchester Linz , the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra , the Radio Symphony Orchestra Pilsen ( Czech Republic ) and the Southwest German Philharmonic ( Konstanz ) as well as the Murandong National Symphony Pyongyang ( North Korea ). Another focus of Parolari's activities since 1982 has been the work with orchestras of German radio companies, including the Radiophilharmonie Hannover , the Rundfunkblasorchester Leipzig and the radio orchestras of the Bavarian Radio , Hessian Radio and Südwestfunk .

Numerous television and radio productions with symphonic light music , operettas , musicals and film music as well as the recording of more than 30 CDs round off the work of Reto Parolari as a conductor.

In addition, Parolari has composed and arranged several hundred works of serious and popular music, some of which have been published by his own publisher, Edition Swiss Music.

Parolari acted as a juror, gave symposia and workshops and held several teaching positions at Swiss universities. He wrote the catalog raisonné of Ernst Fischer (1900–1975) for the GEMA Foundation . His most recent publication “Circus Music in Theory and Practice” (Vienna 2005) is the only specialist book dealing with the topic of circus music .

Parolari had been a member of SUISA since 1974 , including twelve years as President of its Distribution Commission, and since 2007 a member of its board. In addition, he was a long-term member of the Swiss Musicians 'Association, the Swiss Musicians' Association, Swissperform / SIG and the “Youth and Music” association.

Parolari died on December 15, 2019 at his home in Brissago.

Prizes and awards

As a conductor, Reto Parolari was the recipient of numerous prizes and awards: For example, in 1996 the French state and the city of Massy awarded him prizes for his work as orchestra leader. In addition, he is the holder of the Medal of Honor of the Monegasque Guard Music, his orchestra has received several awards at the International Circus Festival in Monte Carlo . For his many years of work as an interpreter, author and publisher of symphonic popular music , Parolari was awarded the recognition prize of the SUISA Foundation for Music in 2004. In 2015 he received the Carl Heinrich Ernst Art Prize in Winterthur. In 2019 he was awarded the City of Winterthur's Culture Prize.
