Revue movie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The revue film is a film genre and closely related to the musical , the operetta and the dance film . The term is mainly used for German and Austrian music and dance films that were made between the 1930s and 1950s .

The films are characterized by light, lively, cheerful entertainment, peppered with recurring singing and dance interludes, predominantly consisting of contemporary hits . The plot is usually based on a romantic comedy , which is often about backstage rehearsals or performances of revues . The revue film can (but does not have to) be a filmed revue of a music theater. The revue film had its greatest popularity during National Socialism , after which it was gradually replaced by the hit film . La Jana , Johannes Heesters and Marika Rökk were among the big stars of the revue film .

Due to the close relationship with the musical, some American film musicals that were made during the same period are sometimes referred to as revue films in German-speaking countries, which, strictly speaking, is not entirely correct, as it is actually a German-speaking genre.

The term “revue film” should not be confused with the term “film revue”. There are also similar terms such as: "Revue Film", a label primarily for Super 8 films, and "Film Revue", the title of a special German film newspaper from the 1940s and 1950s.
