Rex Austin

William Rex Austin (born May 23, 1931 in Riverton , Southland ) is a former New Zealand politician of the National Party .

Career

Austin graduated from Southland Technical College and Lincoln College . He received an agricultural degree from Lincoln College. In 1958 he married Miriam Helen Brumpton, with whom he had four sons.

Austin was a farmer in Colac Bay, Southland, and lived in Riverton . In 1971 he became a member of the Southland Hospital Board.

From 1975 to 1987 he represented the Awarua constituency in the House of Representatives for the New Zealand National Party . He was the second Māori representative of a general constituency (as opposed to the representatives of the Māori Electorates ). Austin became a member of the Order of the British Empire during the 1994 New Year Honors .
