Āghā Rezā-e Abbāsi , Arabic آقا رضا عباسى, DMG ʾĀqā Riḍā ʿAbbāsī (* approx. 1570 in Maschhad ; † 1635 ? In Isfahan ; also Rezā Abbāsi or Rezā ) is considered the best-known Persian miniature painter of the so-called Isfahan school , who flourished during the Safavid rule under Shah Abbās I.

Life

He learned his trade in his father Ali Asghar's studio and was appointed to the court of Shah Abbās I at an early age. At the age of 38, he gave him the honorary title Abbāsi . In the hope of greater personal freedom, Rezā Abbāsi soon left the royal court and worked for a time in the circle of the "simple" people. In 1610 he returned to the court, where he stayed until his death.

Artistic style

In the field of Persian miniature painting, Rezā Abbāsi specialized in naturalistic subjects, with his feminized expressionistically colored portraits reflecting the style of the late Safavid period.

Many of his works depict young men in artificial poses, often in the role of a so- Saqi or Weineinschenkers - the admiring glances exposed to an older man. According to Louis Crompton, this testifies to the Persian tradition of "appreciating youthful male beauty".

The majority of Abbasi's works are in the museum in Tehran named after him . You can also find his works in major museums around the world such as the Smithsonian , the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum .
