The Rhineland dam , together with its eastern continuation, the Westfalendamm , is an important road connection in Dortmund . Both streets form the essential part of Dortmund's B 1 , which comes from the west as A 40 and merges into the A 44 motorway to the east . The length of the Rhineland dam is approx. 3.2 km.

Its western end is marked by the Schnettker Bridge over the Emschertal , which was completely renewed between 2005 and 2012 with three lanes in each direction. The further course of the Rhineland dam leads eastwards on its three-lane south route past the former Bosch building, which has been used as a construction competence center under the name "inhouse" since 2008. The Daimler branch in Dortmund follows . The departures to the Westfalenstadion of Borussia Dortmund , as well as to the Westfalenhallen and the northern tip of the Westfalenpark follow . The route leads past some administration towers of insurance companies and the Westnetz . The Rheinlanddamm ends in the trough under Märkische Strasse or at its intersection with Märkische Strasse . This intersection is still known today under the name “Ophoff” because of the hotel that was formerly located there. Here, too, some representative new buildings have been built in recent years with the Westfalentor and a senior citizens' residence.

The north route from Märkische Strasse has exits towards the city center and the Kreuzviertel . You pass the Dortmund Police Headquarters, new office buildings, the Dortmund IT Center and the Design Department of the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences . Two new hotels were built in the area of the former Nicolaikirche tram loop . After another exit in the direction of Hombruch , the southern border of the Südwestfriedhof Dortmund joins before the Rhineland dam reaches the Schnettker Bridge.

In the course of the Love Parade , the Rheinlanddamm was completely closed for the first time in its history from July 18-20, 2008 due to an event. The period of closure between the Dortmund-West interchange and Märkische Strasse was approximately 36 hours. On July 18, 2010, the Rhineland dam was closed to motor vehicle traffic as part of the Still-Leben Ruhrschnellweg campaign .
