Rhona Martin MBE (* 12. October 1966 in Ayr as Rhona Howie ) is a Scottish curler who has participated in several European and World Championships. Her greatest success is her Olympic victory at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City (the Scottish national team competes for Great Britain at the Olympic Games).

After failing several times to win the Scottish Championship, she qualified for an international championship for the first time in 1998. At the 1998 European Championships in Flims ( Switzerland ) she won the silver medal in the position of skip . After a major change in the team, she took part in the 1999 European Championships in Chamonix , but narrowly missed the medal ranks.

In 2000 she won the Scottish Championship and was given the opportunity to take part in the World Championship in her native Glasgow . A highlight was the win in the preliminary round (round-robin) against Canada with Skip Kelley Law . However, the Canadians retaliated in the semifinals and beat the Scottish women 10: 6. The game for the bronze medal was also lost (10: 5 against Norway with Skip Dordi Nordby ).

The good placements at European and World Championships were enough to qualify for participation in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . Although slightly weakened by illness, the Scottish women won five of the first seven round-robin games. After surprising defeats against the USA and Germany , the semi-final qualification seemed a long way off. Martin and her teammates had to hope for Switzerland to win against Germany in order to have a chance at the tie-breaks, which finally happened.

In the tie-break games, the Scottish women first beat the world champions from Sweden and then Germany. In the semifinals they beat the favored Canadians with Skip Kelley Law and moved into the final. With the win against Switzerland with Skip Luzia Ebnöther , Rhona Martin and her teammates Deborah Knox , Fiona MacDonald and Janice Rankin won the first British gold medal since 1984.

The up-and-coming Jackie Lockhart beat Rhona Martin at the Scottish Championships a few days after winning the Olympics and also won the world title in the same year. In 2005 Martin put together an "All Star Team" with Lockhart in second position. At the European Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , the Scottish women achieved the rather disappointing fifth place. Martin also took part in the curling tournament of the 2006 Winter Olympics, but the Scottish team failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

For her victory at the Winter Olympics, Martin was made a Member of Order of the British Empire in 2002.
