Ribeira das Tainhas is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Vila Franca do Campo on the Portuguese Atlantic island of São Miguel , which belongs to the Azores . 703 people (as of June 30, 2011) live in the municipality on an area of ​​9.6 km², which corresponds to a population density of 73.3 inhabitants / km².

history

The previously uninhabited island of São Miguel was settled by the Portuguese from 1439 . Ribeira das Tainhas probably originated much later. The parish church was built from 1811 . Ribeira das Tainhas remained part of the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo until it was spun off in 1980 and became an independent municipality in the district of Vila Franca do Campo.
