Richard Tiffany Gere (born August 31, 1949 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American film actor.

Life

The son of insurance agent Homer George Gere and housewife Doris Anna Tiffany, Richard Gere was born in Philadelphia and grew up on a farm near Syracuse ( New York ). He has three sisters and one brother. Gere learned several instruments (piano, guitar, trumpet, drums) at an early age and composed for the student theater. A sports scholarship enabled him to study philosophy at the University of Massachusetts in 1967 , which he dropped out in 1969.

The Protestant -educated Gere was on a Nepal -Travel 1,978 a lasting impression of Eastern spirituality. He has professed Buddhism since the early 1990s and is considered a friend of the Dalai Lama . Gere has worked as an actor since around 1969, he began with roles in Broadway productions. In 1973 he appeared in the musical Grease in London , followed by Shakespeare plays with the US troupe Young Vic Company .

In 1978 he helped a friend, the later very famous photographer Herb Ritts , to break through with a photo. Gere was photographed by him while resting at a gas station.

Gere's first film role was in The Lonely Job (1975). Since then he has made at least one movie every year. In 1980 he became a star with American Gigolo (German: a man for certain hours). His looks and talent for characterful roles earned him the lead role in An Officer and a Gentleman . He starred alongside Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman in 1990 . In 2003/2004, the film still attracted seven million German viewers in front of the screen (market share: 20 percent). The Hollywood dream couple stood in front of the camera again in 1998 in The Bride Who Doesn't Dare , but this time the criticism was divided.

He also worked as a Latin Lover (Looking for Mr. Goodbar , 1977) or as a Knight Lanzelot (First Knight , 1995, German Der 1.
