Sir Richard John Evans (born September 29, 1947 in Woodford Green , Essex , now London ) is a British historian who has published numerous works on German history in the 19th and 20th centuries .

Life

After studying History Richard J. Evans was in 1972 at St Antony's College of Oxford University doctorate . Afterwards he was a lecturer at the University of Stirling in Scotland from 1972 to 1976 . From 1976 to 1989 he taught European history at the University of East Anglia , first as a lecturer and since 1983 as a professor . In 1989 Richard Evans moved to the University of London , where he taught history at Birkbeck College until 1998 . Since 1998 he has been Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University .

In 2008 Evans was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History (from 2010 Regius Professor of History) at Cambridge University. The post is conferred by the Prime Minister on behalf of the British monarch and dates back to 1724. His successor as Regius Professor was Christopher Clark in 2014 . Evans has been President of Wolfson College (Cambridge) since October 2010 .

In 2000 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature . In 2012 Evans was named a Knight Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth II . In 2015 he was elected as a full member of the Academia Europaea . In the same year he received the Leverhulme Medal from the British Academy .

His works on German history in the 19th and 20th centuries have been awarded the “Wolfson Literary Award for History” and the medal for art and science from the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . With death in Hamburg ( Death in Hamburg , 1987; German 1990), he wrote a detailed analysis of Hamburger cholera epidemic 1892 . His Rituals of Retribution ( Rituals of Retribution , 1996; German 2001) is a monumental monograph on the development of the death penalty in Germany since the Carolina in 1532 under legal, cultural, historical and sociological aspects. It is regarded as the standard work on the subject. Evans gained greater prominence and media presence in the trial of David Irving (2000), in which he appeared as an expert reviewer and proved that Irving was knowingly making false claims about historical facts such as the number of victims in the bombing of Dresden or the Holocaust. He published his reflections on the issue in the book Telling Lies about Hitler (German Der Geschistorfälscher , 2001).

Between 2003 and 2008 Evans published a three-volume history of the Third Reich that was translated into numerous languages.
