Richard Mansfield
Richard Mansfield (born May 24, 1857 in Berlin , † August 30, 1907 in New London (Connecticut) ) was a German - British actor who spent much of his career in the United States . Mansfield was best known for his character portrayals in numerous plays of the late 19th century.
Life
Mansfield spent his childhood on Heligoland , which was then under English rule. His mother was the opera soprano Erminia Rudersdorff (1822-1882), his father Maurice Mansfield († 1861), a British wine merchant. Mansfield became famous for his double role in T. Russell Sullivan's play The Curious Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson . Mansfield played the two characters Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde so good that some viewers thought his performance was real and not played and suspected Mansfield of being the serial killer Jack the Ripper , who was murdering in London at the same time .
