Ride Like a Girl is a 2019 Australian film depicting the life of rider Michelle Payne and her historic Melbourne Cup win , which became the first female jockey to win in 2015 in the 155-year history of the race. In the biographical sports drama led Rachel Griffiths Director. It stars Teresa Palmer as Payne and Sam Neill as her father. Michelle's brother Stevie Payne plays himself.

Michelle Payne is the youngest of ten children from racehorse trainer Paddy Payne. Her mother died when she was a few months old. Her father Paddy had to raise all ten children alone. Michelle has had a particularly close relationship with her brother Stevie, who has Down syndrome , from an early age. Eight of the ten Payne children are jockey. Stevie became a groom .
Even as a small child, Michelle dreams of one day winning the Melbourne Cup , the most important Australian horse race. She becomes a jockey like her siblings. Her brother Stevie supports Michelle with her rides. Michelle has had several serious accidents, but still does not give up her dream and when she meets Prince of Penzance she is convinced that she can win the Cup with this horse. Payne finally wins the Melbourne Cup on November 3, 2015 with Prince of Penzance , a 6 year old bay gelding .

The film received mixed and positive reviews, with 62% approval from Rotten Tomatoes and (as of March 4, 2020) 6.8 / 10 points from IMDb .
