Giant oak in Niedergurig

The so-called giant oak is a striking and regionally known tree near Niedergurig in the Bautzen district and a natural monument . It is located a little south of the village on the Großer Ziegelteich. Their age is estimated to be 700 to 800 years. The trunk circumference at chest height is 8.87, at the bottom 10.40 meters, the height is 22 meters. In 2001 the circumference of the trunk at the point of its smallest diameter (waist) was 7.93 meters and in 2004 it was 8.98 meters at a height of one meter. Around 1930 the trunk of the oak was filled with concrete because the tree was partly hollow. In the summer of 2002 there was a fire inside the tree for several days; since then his condition has steadily deteriorated. Two more arson attacks were carried out on the tree in December 2019. The oak is under nature protection .

It is depicted in their coat of arms as a symbol of the municipality of Malschwitz , to which Niedergurig also belongs.
