The Rigi-Bahnen ( RB , proper spelling: Rigi Bahnen ) are a railway company in Switzerland with headquarters in Arth . The company's operational headquarters are in Vitznau .

The company was created in 1992 through the merger of the Arth-Rigi-Bahn (ARB) in Arth and the Rigibahn-Gesellschaft in Vitznau, which owned the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn (VRB) and the Weggis – Rigi Kaltbad (LWRK) cable car . Since then, the Rigi-Bahnen have operated the two standard gauge - cogwheel railways ARB and VRB and the LWRK aerial cableway to the Rigi , a panoramic mountain on Lake Lucerne .

Rail operations

stretch

The route network of the RB measures 15.40 km and is used by two railway lines, which correspond to the former operation of the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn and the Arth-Rigi-Bahn. A track connection from the VRB to the ARB has only existed since July 12, 1990 in Rigi Staffel.

Vitznau-Rigi Railway

The standard gauge line of the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn measures 6.85 km and is electrified with 1500 V direct current . A rack according to the Riggenbach system is used along the entire length of the route . The property line from Vitznau to Rigi Staffelhöhe, on the border between the canton of Lucerne and the canton of Schwyz, was opened on May 23, 1871. The continuation from the Staffelhöhe to the Kulm, however, was built by the ARB and leased to the VRB from June 27, 1873. With the merger of the two companies in 1992, this regulation ceased to exist.

Arth Rigi Railway

The standard gauge line of the Arth-Rigi-Bahn measures 8.55 km and is electrified with 1500 V direct current . A rack according to the Riggenbach system is used along the entire length of the route . The property line from Arth-Goldau train station to Rigi Kulm was opened on June 4, 1875. The line from Arth am See to Arth-Goldau, which was opened at the same time as a pure adhesion railway, was operated separately as an overland tram and was discontinued at the end of August 1959.

Cable cars and ski area

In addition to the two cog railways ARB and VRB, the company also includes the Weggis – Rigi Kaltbad aerial cableway (aerial tramway with 80-person gondola lift, 924 m difference in altitude) and several ski lifts. The ski area is usually open from the end of November (depending on snow conditions) to mid-March.

The aerial tramway from Weggis to Kaltbad was built in 1968, which means that its concession will expire in 2019. A system change to an orbit , which the railway company urgently strives to replace for operational and convenience reasons , is being examined, but is met with resistance from conservationists and local residents, as u. a. more than the current 3 supports would be created and the proximity to the ground would also be more disturbing.
