Riley Armstrong (born November 8, 1984 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who was active in the North American minor leagues and in numerous European leagues, but also two, during his career between 2004 and 2016 Has played games for the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League . His older brother Colby Armstrong is also a hockey player.
Since 2018 he has been the head coach of the Maine Mariners from the ECHL .
Career
Armstrong began his career in the 2001/02 season in the lower-class Canadian junior leagues Saskatchewans. For the 2002/03 season he moved to the Western Hockey League for the Kootenay Ice . After 65 games and 16 scorer points in his rookie season , the striker left the team and moved to the Everett Silvertips after just one year within the league . There he was able to more than double his points from the previous year with 44 points.
Since Armstrong had never been selected in an NHL Entry Draft , the Cleveland Barons , the then farm team of the San Jose Sharks , took him from the American Hockey League as a free agent in the summer of 2004 . There he completed two solid seasons, but they showed his offensive deficits with only 19 and nine points respectively. Due to the relocation of the Barons after the 2005/06 season , who moved to Worcester , Massachusetts and renamed Worcester Sharks , Armstrong also moved there. After his best season to date and an enormous increase in performance compared to previous years, the Sharks extended his contract for another year until the end of the 2007/08 season . The power forward continued seamlessly in the following season and reached 34 points.
After a renewed contract extension in the summer of 2008, he was appointed to the NHL squad of the San Jose Sharks for the first time during the 2008/09 season and made his NHL debut. However, it stayed with two missions and he continued to play mainly in the AHL. Despite his improved game, which was particularly evident in the playoffs, his expiring contract was not extended. He then signed a contract with the Calgary Flames . These transferred the Canadian on March 3, 2010 in exchange for Andy Delmore to league rivals Detroit Red Wings , who initially sent him to their farm team Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. After the right-handed shooter ran for two games for the Utah Grizzlies in November 2011 , he was signed by the Barys Astana from the KHL . After only nine appearances, Canadians signed a contract with the Augsburger Panthers in the DEL for the rest of the season .
In the 2011/12 season Armstrong started with the Elmira Jackals from the ECHL , but was loaned to the AHL club Binghamton Senators for four weeks in November . After his return to the Jackals, the striker was drawn to Europe again for the rest of the season - this time to the Finnish SM-liiga representative Saimaan Pallo . In the following season, the right-shooter returned to the ECHL to the Utah Grizzlies, where he took over the post of captain. For the 2013/14 season Armstrong signed a contract with the German second division club EV Landshut and played there with 64 points from 45 games, the best season of his professional career. In the summer of 2015, the Canadian moved to HC Vita Hästen in the second-class HockeyAllsvenskan , where he acted as the team's assistant captain in the 2014/15 season , before returning to the DEL2 in December 2015 and signing with the Heilbronner Falken .
For the 2015/16 season Armstrong returned to North America and initially joined the Utah Grizzlies from the East Coast Hockey League , but was transferred to the Reading Royals within the league before the start of the season . In February 2016, he announced the end of his active professional career. He then worked as an assistant coach at the Wheeling Nailers from 2016 to 2018 , before taking over the position of head coach at the newly founded Maine Mariners in 2018 .
