Ringo Lam

Ringo Lam , also known as Ringo Lam Ling-Tung ( Chinese  林嶺東  /  林岭东 , Pinyin Lín Lǐngdōng , Jyutping Lam 4 Ling 5 dung 1 ; * 1955 in Hong Kong ; † December 29, 2018 ibid), was a Chinese director , Screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Lam began his film career as an actor. In 1973 he took a year-long acting course, where he met Chow Yun-Fat .

After working as a production assistant and producer for television for several years, he went to Canada in 1978 and studied film studies there. In 1981, Chow Yun-Fat encouraged him to return to Hong Kong. There, with the help of producer and director Tsui Hark, he got the direction for Esprit d'Amour ( 陰陽 錯  /  阴阳 错 , Yīnyángcuò , Jyutping Jam 1 joeng 4 co 3 , Cantonese:  Yam yeung choh ) in 1983 .

In 1985 he directed City on Fire with Chow Yun-Fat and Danny Lee . City on Fire is an undercover cop film that - together with City Wolf by John Woo - set new standards in Hong Kong action cinema. The end of City on Fire also inspired Quentin Tarantino to write the script for his multi-award-winning debut film Reservoir Dogs , which even copied some scenes in almost every detail.

Two successful sequels followed - Prison on Fire and School on Fire - which portrayed the conditions in prisons and schools at that time. Other films that Lam made in Hong Kong before moving to the US include Double Dragon with Jackie Chan and Full Contact , again with his friend Chow Yun-Fat.

In 1996 he made his first film in the United States with Maximum Risk . Jean-Claude Van Damme played the main role here . He also shot Replicant and In Hell with van Damme . In between he kept returning to Hong Kong to produce and shoot other films there as well.
