action
During the American Civil War, Yankee Colonel Cord McNally succeeds in arresting two Confederate soldiers who had previously successfully raided a Union gold train. It turns out that the transport was betrayed. McNally tries to get some information about the fact that one of his best young officers was killed in the robbery. Since neither prisoner knows the name of the traitor, they promise to inform McNally if they find out. Some time later, shortly after the Civil War, McNally, meanwhile retired from the army, receives a message from Rio Lobo about the whereabouts of a traitor. Together with the former Southern Captain Pierre Cordona and the young Shasta Delaney, McNally sets off for Rio Lobo, where they want to meet the second ex-prisoner, Tuscarora Phillips. Here McNally finally meets the man behind who was responsible for the betrayal during the war.
Reviews
Cinema writes: “The film and its tough leading actor John Wayne draw on the glory of days gone by. Genre fans, however, will be compensated by skilled action scenes and Hawks' well-known good humor. "
Christoph Huber writes: "Plagued by old age, Hawks' Cowboys try their hand at the carefreeness of earlier years and find frustration and only brief consolation in a few moments of interaction."
Joe Hembus notes that the film is "Howard Hawk's swan song, his last director in fifty years of film" and marked by resignation. Hawks have confirmed the similarity of the film to the previous Rio Bravo and El Dorado .
Phil Hardy judges that the film has a wide range between "light comedy" and "a dark mood during the final shootout". This differentiates Rio Lobo from its predecessor films.
Trivia
When uncoupling the wagons from the locomotive, the soldier releases a Janney coupling . This was only designed by Eli Hamilton Janney in 1868 , after the end of the American Civil War.
