history
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous people of the Ancermas lived in the area of today's Riosucio . Modern Riosucio was created by relocating the towns of La Montaña and Quiebralomo between 1815 and 1819. These were merged under the name Riosucio in 1846 by decree of the governor of the province of Cauca, José Laureano Mosquera. From 1850 the region was increasingly settled from Antioquia.
economy
The most important industry in Riosucio today is coffee growing . Other agricultural products such as sugar cane , corn , bananas , cassava , citrus plants , fruits , vegetables and legumes are also grown. In addition, cattle and poultry production and pond farming also play a role. Historically, gold mining was important in the municipality .
Carnival of Riosucio
A carnival is held in Riosucio every two years in January . The carnival goes back to the rivalry between the towns of La Montaña and Quiebralomo , which united to form Riosucio , and was launched in the 19th century in honor of the Three Kings . Since 1915 the devil has played a special role in carnival, which is why it is also called the devil's carnival. In the carnival, indigenous influences are particularly present, which mix with African and Spanish influences.
