Rivale is a chamber opera by the Italian composer Lucia Ronchetti ( music and libretto ).

action

The opera is divided into three extensive scenes which trace the transformation of Clorinda. As a Saracen princess, she finds herself in an indissoluble inner contradiction between her honor as a fighter against the Christian crusaders and her love for her opponent, the Norman prince Tancrede . The plot consists of an inner monologue about this conflict, which finds expression in particular through her journey into an enchanted forest, in which thoughts, emotions and inner compulsions are revealed.

Instrumentation

The orchestral line-up for the opera includes the following instruments:

music

The music reproduces the whispers and laments in the enchanted forest in the Baroque style of the sound painting description of nature. The battle scenes are particularly characterized by percussion. The music makes a complex, harmonious journey through many centuries and genres and penetrates into musical territories that range from Perotin to Led Zeppelin . The viola has the task of repeatedly evoking the image of Tancrede. In contrast, the brass section is “vocalized” while the voice is “instrumentalized” for its part (using the beatboxing technique, among other things ).

libretto

Lucia Ronchetti tells the “Selva de Saron” episode from Torquato Tasso's epic La Gerusalemme liberata from the perspective of the Muslim warrior Clorinda. The monological text consists of inner scenes that reflect this woman's memories, thoughts and emotions. By carefully selecting from the French verses, the composer removed her text from the epic and sublime tone of the baroque opera.
