Robbie Shakespeare
Robert "Robbie" Shakespeare (born September 27, 1953 in Kingston , Jamaica , † December 8, 2021 in Florida , United States ) was a Jamaican bassist and keyboardist . Together with Sly Dunbar he was active in the duo Sly & Robbie .
Life
Robbie Shakespeare grew up in Jamaica and started playing bass at an early age. Before working with the drummer and music producer Sly Dunbar , he had already gained experience in recording studios . He had recorded the piece of music Stir It Up with Bob Marley and worked with the band The Aggrovators .
Shakespeare and Dunbar formed the duo The Riddim Twins, also known as Sly & Robbie . They played together with the reggae artist Peter Tosh and with the band Black Uhuru ; they also played and produced for numerous other music groups. The most recently released album is Version Born (2004) with Sly Dunbar. In the field of jazz and fusion music, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in recording sessions with Rico Rodriguez , Chris Hinze , Manu Dibango , Kazumi Watanabe , Bernie Worrell and Monty Alexander between 1976 and 1999 .
In 2015 the rhythm team undertook a tour with the Norwegian jazz trumpeter and his accompanying musicians under the title Sly & Robbie meet Nils Petter Molvaer .
For 2015 Shakespeare and Dunbar was awarded the Musgrave Medal in Gold by the Institute of Jamaica .
Robbie Shakespeare died on December 8, 2021 in a hospital in the US state of Florida after a kidney operation.
