Robert Lee "Bob" Beck (born December 30, 1936 in San Diego ; † April 2, 2020 ) was an American pentathlete and fencer .

Life

Robert Beck took in 1960 at the Olympic Games in Rome , where he started in modern pentathlon. He won the bronze medal both individually and with the team. In 1968 he again belonged to the US delegation and competed in modern pentathlon and fencing . In the pentathlon he finished 22nd in the individual, with the team he just missed the medal ranks in fourth. In fencing he was part of the epee team, which was eliminated after the group stage. At world championships in 1961 he won his only precious metal with the bronze medal in the team competition.

Beck, who initially served as a lieutenant in the US Navy from 1958 to 1961 , graduated from Harvard Medical School with a degree in medicine . He then practiced as a dentist in San Antonio until the end of his life . He was married and had three children. Beck died in early April 2020 at the age of 83 as a result of COVID-19 . He was in a hospital due to a head injury from a fall in February 2020 and was infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
