Robert Cushman Murphy

Robert Cushman Murphy (born April 29, 1887 in Brooklyn , † March 20, 1973 in Stony Brook ) was an American ornithologist and temporarily the curator responsible for birds at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City .

Murphy was born in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Brown University . During his academic career, he published 600 papers. Two of his best known works are Logbook for Grace; Whaling Brig Daisy, 1912–1913 and Oceanic Birds of South America . During the shark attacks on the New Jersey coast (1916), Murphy was one of the scientists who contributed significantly to the identification of the shark species in question.

After his retirement, he worked together with other citizens of Long Iceland from the use of DDT to complicate. In some of his papers he anticipated the statements of Rachel Carson without, however, reaching her influence.

Honors

He wrote the monumental work Oceanic Birds of South America , for which he was awarded the William Brewster Medal and the John Burroughs Medal . In 1936 Murphy received the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal from the National Academy of Sciences , and in 1946 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .

The Mount Murphy in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land and Murphy Wall on South Georgia are named after him.
