Robert Getchell

Robert Getchell (born December 5, 1936 in Kansas City , Missouri , † October 21, 2017 in California ) was an American screenwriter and university professor .

Life

Getchell studied English at the University of Missouri , where he graduated in 1965. After initially working as a freelance writer, he wrote the screenplay for Alice Doesn't Live Here in 1974 , which was filmed by Martin Scorsese , and for which Getchell was nominated for an Oscar in 1975 for Best Original Screenplay. Getchell received his second Oscar nomination in 1977 for his screenplay for This Land is My Land .

A low point in his career was the script for the 1981 film Meine liebe Rabenmutter , for which Getchell was awarded the Golden Raspberry in 1982 .

After Getchell had written his last screenplay for a film with The Client in 1994 , he took a position as professor of English literature first at the University of Missouri, and later at Miami University in the US state of Ohio .
