Robert Guédiguian (born December 3, 1953 in Marseille ) is a French film director and producer of German-Armenian descent.

Life

Guédiguian has worked as a screenwriter since 1980 and as a director since 1981. He started working as a producer in 1985 and has now comprised more than 30 productions.

Most of Guédiguian's films are Marseille-based social dramas with strong sympathy for disadvantaged groups such as workers or immigrants. His best-known film in Germany is Marius and Jeannette - A Love in Marseille (1997).

His awards include the 1997 Louis Delluc Prize for Marius and Jeanette - A Love in Marseille and the Golden Ear Prize of the Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid 2000 for The City Eats Its Children . In 2011 he won the European Parliament's LUX Film Prize, which has been awarded annually since 2007, for his feature film The Snow on Kilimanjaro , which addresses the injustices of modern societies.

In 2018 he was appointed to the competition jury of the 71st Cannes Film Festival .
